Revising websites

Published February 12, 2021

I finally got around to redoing some of my more neglected websites. Now for the root and repo domains there is something better than some poorly written HTML I cobbled together. I’ve made the sites with Hugo and written the copy with markdown. Originally I used Hugo as it has some support for Org mode, which is my favoured lightweight markup language, however it failed to render properly so I returned to using the recommended markdown.

The new sites aren’t complicated, but are definitely miles better than what was there. The repo site has some basic text describing the project and has a brief getting started section. The root site is a bit more complex, working as an about me. Its all in a bid to try and improve my online presence, especially as I start applying for internships and the like. It can’t hurt to have some sort of site that doesn’t look too bad.

I also updated this blog to the latest theme. Its a little simpler than the older one, and feels nicer to look at for a blog. Who knows, I may end up moving this site from WordPress to Hugo if I can be stuffed. It could be good to move it to a static site, rather than the more complex mess that is WordPress. Then again, the flexibility that WordPress affords can be very useful as I change what I want to present. We’ll see what I end up doing.

I’ve also finally gotten my wiki back up and running. I went with Dokuwiki instead of MediaWiki, again due to its relative simplicity. I still need to find a theme for it and reupload my notes, but this setup is a much easier setup that the last one, and hopefully will be more fault tolerant. So far its good to have a wiki back up, just needing to refill it again.
