Victoria's opening plan

Published September 15, 2020

At the moment Victoria is still in lock down, with Melbourne having the longest lock down in the world. This is coming after we went into stage 4 after our numbers started to rise following some outbreaks. I can’t really fault the government for it, they made a mistake initially but have been doing their best after to make it up. The daily briefings from the premier has really shown Andrews doing his job.

At the end of the lock down, the government revealed their plan to bring back some normalcy to the state. The plan progressively reduces restrictions pending numbers and time. It seems that most people are criticising it for being too cautious, taking too long to open up and placing stricter restrictions than are present in other states. It really seems like I’m in the minority in thinking its a bit optimistic. The plan accounts for stores opening up when there are no new cases for a few days. My problem with this is its hope to open up by Christmas. While I think this would be good, I think its pretty unlikely. As we start to open up, people will forget and the numbers will start to go up again. What makes me even more nervous is that people are going to avoid getting tested, so we’ll get a bunch of unreported cases. Its good that they’re testing the sewage to try and counteract this, but I haven’t heard anything about correlating the amount of COVID there and the number of people with it.

I mean, I’m still hopeful that the whole plan will still go ahead as we all want it to, but I just doubt the time frame and ability of people to remember the restrictions.
