So upon getting home from exchange, I discovered the networking situation post NBN. The NBN installers added the modem and an Optus router in front of the existing system. This caused the existing network to exist behind two routers, creating a double NAT for the network. Upon seeing this I tried to play with the cables a little, unsuccessfully, so I began to do some research.
I thought that maybe the connection was a VDSL one, which it isn’t. I was unsure as to why my playing didn’t work and resolved to try again when no one was home.
I arrived home today after work to find out that the internet is out (crappy router), so it seems my time has presented itself. I change the cables over such that the NBN modem feeds directly into the old router and immediately the internet goes up and problem disappears. I then try to check if the remote ports are open and sure enough they are.
So I guess its my bad for thinking Optus was blocking ports on the NBN despite them saying the contrary. At least now my system is working as it should.
