So finally at home, we have moved to the NBN. Now that should be it, right? Faster internet, open some ports to recreate what I had before and life goes on. I even finally got around to setting up a Dynamic DNS record for my home server. You’d think, right?
Yeah nah. Although my upload speed has increased, my download speed fluctuates. Not only that but for some reason Optus isn’t allowing port forwarding on their NBN. I go to follow some of the guides online for the sagecom router they provided us with and there’s no change. What a pain. After spending some time looking up the problem on the Optus forums, it seems that under the NBN with Optus, port forwarding isn’t a thing. So that really sucks.
Looking around, it seems like the other options are ngrok, which seems kinda dodgy, or ssh remote forwarding to another server. So I went with the latter. After fooling around with ssh config files and systemd units, I finally set up an automatic forwarding connection. Now I only need to figure out how to forward the rest of the services I had at home through the VPS. One step at a time.
