Upon reading this morning that Oracle has begun offering a free tier of VPS that seems to be fairly competitive (2 compute servers with 100GB of drive space between them), I signed up and started poking around. A little experimenting revealed that the compute performance of the Oracle VPS was significantly better than GCP’s, although the network speed of GCP was better than Oracle.
As a result of this I have thrown up a Nextcloud server on the Oracle VPS, due to the extra space. Currently it has a decent amount of storage, however I am looking into some sort of tiered distributed file system to further expand the storage in conjunction with my home server. Until I get better internet speed at home, I guess caching commonly used files on the VPS will have to work.
I’ve also added in Matomo tracking to the site. I think that should be slightly less creepy than using google analytics. I think this may help to see if there is ever anyone other than me who accesses this site. Still looking for things to do with the site additionally, so suggestions are welcome.
If anyone has any idea as to how to do a tiered distributed file system, please let me know. I’ve asked on reddit, but you never know whether the internet will come through for you or your post will be lost with the rest.
